I would like to replace the 1.2gig hard drive in my starmax, but am unsure what kind of ide hard drive I can use. I have already tried a 10gig ata drive but it would not recognise even though it was pre-formatted? Is it possible that this hard drive was too new for the computer?
Most current ATA Hard Drives appear to come out of the box with the jumper set for CSL (Cable Select) and an 80 pin cable. The ATA ports on a StarMax 3000 are configured for 40 pin cables so it is advisable to use the cables that came with your StarMax. The only other thing to check is that the Hard Drive jumper setting is set to Master. Both ATA ports in the StarMax 3000 are Master only and do not support Slave drives in any configuration. I have recently upgraded a StarMax 3000/200 with a 30 GB Hard Drive and a 52X/24X/52X CD-R/RW CDROM Drive and had to change both from CSL to Master. Using the on-board ATA ports will not give you Ultra performance from Ultra drives. To do that you will need to purchase an after market PCI ATA Ultra controller, preferably one with Mac drivers. The HD formatting and drivers for both HD and CDROM that I use are Speedtools from intech.
I hope that you can find something of value in that rambling paragraph. Good luck.

Dear Daniel, Jeff, etal:
I do not know "peartree's" purpose behind this little diatribe. Perhaps he merely sprouted a 'Wild Hair' where the Moon don't shine and this was the only way he could scratch it. Regardless, it smacks of chumming the waters while trolling for a Flame War. I sincerely hope that we have all been around long enough that we have had our fill of such trivia. Please, let us let it go.
