Well, go figure.

First, thanks to everyone who replied with great suggestions.

I went backed and double-checked connections -- everything was OK.

I unplugged a few major ones (like the internal SCSI cable and plugged it 
in again.

I did a little dance around the thing.

And it started fine.

I can only assume one of those connections wasn't quite right -- or it 
didn't want to see me dance again.
