> Mine does this at times too-& I don't have high speed network.

This started happening the day I got cable internet set up using my then-new
Ethernet card. And it only seems to be a problem with network transfers in
progress. I say "high speed" because I only get this with inbound streams,
and my cable connection is 600/128 (although I think I've noticed it with
occasional outbound transfers). Maybe it's related to how the OS processes
incoming data, or maybe just related to transfer speed.

What you will find is that due the screwed up nature of Mac OS, some
applications will actually cut out music on odd occasions, like
GraphicConverter (my copy of which also has some evil bugs). You'll also
notice music pauses during heavy paging, too.

Well. Music is generally played on an interrupt-level task, so it is very
hard to disturb it (paging aside). All the tricks that freeze the Mac (menu
down, scrolling, Bomb dialog up, application busy or frozen, etc) do not
affect playback because music playback runs at interrupt level, same as the
mouse cursor.

So, scrolling the screen should never in the least affect music, and
normally it doesn't. However, I don't know what networking is like, so maybe
scrolling affects networking which affects the interrupt system which
affects music playback - I don't know.

This won't have a slightest bit of effect on anything CPU-related, though.
That said, I have 144 Mb in here.

I don't think it's anything to do with RAM at all. But no, I am not going to
be doing this, as I run at least 20 apps at all times (the Mac is left
running all the time). The odd glitch in music is not going to screw up how
I use the machine :)

The 68040 is a 16-bit "68k" processor. You mean the 604e I assume, in my
case? (4000/200).

And I wonder if it's not even a CPU issue, but more of a OS issue - a NIC
driver that doesn't play well with how Mac OS works. Hard to tell really
what it's up to.

> I prefer iTunes to any other software I've used for playing music.

Heh, I can't stand iTunes :) I use SoundApp - it's lighter on the CPU (10%
vs iTunes 30%), lets me use the Finder to arrange my music (I love trance,
and trance cannot be arranged using iTunes feeble Library system), and
supports tracked music - I still don't see a way to get iTunes to play
MOD/S3M/IT. Admittedly, SoundApp is a long way behind Winamp, but it's
pretty good for a program with no plugin support, relying entirely on
built-in format support. Out of choice, I'd be running Winamp. I did run
Winamp, but alas there are some nasty bugs in it - it had a tendency to hit
null pointers, and force quitting it would destabilise Open Transport or
just demolish the OS (quit attempts in MacsBug would get stuck around the
stupid IterateHashTable mulberry bush ad nauseum).

So SoundApp it is :) It's a bit of a shame that I've not yet seen a
successor app to SoundApp for X, in terms of music playback
(MP2/MP3/MID/MOD/S3M/IT all inside one player)
