The default setting for iTunes is to "synch" its whole library with iPod
(i.e, put all the songs in its library into the iPod and remove all songs
not in its library from the iPod), so you are right. This can be changed
however. Remember the settings are made in the computer(s), not in the iPod
itself.
If you start iTunes on your computer then go to the "Help" in the menu
bar and scroll down to "iPod Help" you will get info on how to manually
transfer songs, vs automatically synch. You may need to download 'iPod
software 1.3 updater' from Apple to get this Help menu
(www.apple.com/support/ipod).
"To transfer music manually, connect iPod to your computer and open iTunes.
Select iPod in the iTunes source list [the column with the playlists on the
left-it will probably do this automatically when it's connected] click the
Options button [this is a little button on the bottom right that looks like
an iPod and will appear next to the equalizer button (which looks like three
vertical slots with dots in them) only when the iPod is connected], and
select "Manually manage songs and playlists". Now you can drag individual
songs and playlists from iTunes to iPod to transfer them. You can also set
iTunes to automatically update iPod with selected songs or playlists
only..." it doesn't seem to give any more info on this option.
As I understand it, if you set your Starmax computer to manually transfer
music to iPod, you can add songs to the existing ones without deleting any,
but when you connect iPod to the Powerbook, which is apparently set to the
default sych setting, it will erase these new songs--
Unless you a) also set the Powerbook for manual, non-sync mode or:
b) A work-around would be to use the feature to select
"automatically update selected playlists only" on the Powerbook, check off
all the playlists in the options window and move every song in the
Powerbook's library into a playlist. Since the songs from the starmax are
not in one of these playlists they wouldnt be affected. You could also have
a playlist in the Powerbook's iTunes containing ALL the songs in that
iTunes library (you might name it "entire PB library") and have that checked
off in the options window. When you add songs to the Powerbook's iTunes you
would have to put them into one of the playlists also to have them
automatically go into the iPod when next connected.
I haven't tried this, so proceed with caution.
When you first connect the iPod to your SM computer I think you will need to
switch into the manual mode quickly, as soon as the iPod options button
appears, before it begins to automatically synch-it takes about half a
minute I think for it to start. As soon as you hit the button labeled
"Manually manage songs and playlists" the iPod should switch from reading
"do not disconnect" to reading "ok to disconnect". Then you can move your
songs in.
Unfortunately you can't move songs from the iPod to another computer
unless you set up the option to use it as a hard disk: "enable firewire disk
use", which complicates its use. I haven't done this so read the iPod help
to get more info or ask someone who has used it this way if you want to know
more.
Another way to go would be to do as someone else suggested and transfer
the songs from the Starmax directly to the Powerbook and put them in the
iTunes library. A crossover cable and Appletalk would be the best way to
accomplish this. It is a somwhat tricky procedure also- I think we just had
the networking topic didnt we?
