The Starmax clones can only handle _one_ drive each on the IDE and ATA connectors. (This is an old topic for those just now joining the StarMax world.)

One solution is the one you suggest you might try. Exchange your CD unit for a SCSI one, freeing up one of the connectors. Look in the archives for compatible CD units or make sure it is Macintosh compatible. If I were going to do this again at this point, I would opt for a CD reader/writer.

Other possible solutions include SCSI HDs or an ATA-PCI card (I can put four HDs on this card).
