Thanks to those in the list that contributed. I managed to make the program DAVE work well with my starmax 3000, OS 8.6. At then end I have a small network with 2 macs and 5 pc, using a windows xp as server. The network is set to share disks and a printer, and connect to the University system and other labs and of course internet.
The difficulties I had at the beginning were caused by the way the network was setup, with automatic IP addresses. DAVE does not like that and one must give the actual IP address of the server.
