I think that particular task is /exceptionally/ hard for anyone to do right. Our core devs will be working on it for our 1.0 release; it's an important part of our future development.
I think there's a low likelihood of success by a student new to our codebase. I'm afraid we can't take the risk of assigning it to an unknown entity.
I'd much rather use our GSoC chits for work that can be effectively completed in the time allotted, by a student.
Brion, if you disagree, I'd appreciate some feedback, but I've made a point on the GSoC page that I don't favor this particular task.
