I'm trying to think how it can be used to help the project, rather
than just satisfy my curiosity... It would be nice to know what
proportion of site visitors are using different OSes... perhaps we
might find a specific mobile device/OS having very high hit rates,
which might in turn indicate a good port target.

We may also discover search terms which reveal specific problems after
a release, but we should get that information

Tell me again how that is supposed to work - is there a gettext php
script somewhere?

All of the data generated in your IT infrastructure is seriously valuable.
Why? It contains a definitive record of application performance, security
threats, fraudulent activity, and more. Splunk takes this data and makes
sense of it. IT sense. And common sense.
