Since it seems we both have the same type of modem (USR 56k Professional
Message), I'm afraid to say welcome to the "club of the unlucky" ;-)

For some kind of first aid, you can try my init string, which works ok so
far (more or less), since I still have to deal with unstable behaviour of
STFax since STFax3.0 till the current v4.1.

Sometimes it recognizes an incoming call and picks up the phone, but maybe
the very next call isn't recognized at all. What to think about that ?!
(and yes ! - I REALLY tried A LOT with different timeouts and the like
...;-)

I am using the original "serial.device"(v43.1) from OS3.5 and the following Init
string so far:

AT&F1&D2X3S0=0+MCA=0

(which is almost identical to STFax's preset for the "US Robotics
Sportster Message Plus")

My modem timeout value is "3" at the moment.

Tell me your experiences ...
maybe you are blessed to have more luck

greetings from Vienna ...
