In a show of defiance, Labor lawmakers joined forces with the opposition to overturn the firing of two of the government's most vocal critics from the chairmanships of influential committees. Outspoken Labor members Donald Anderson and Gwyneth Dunwoody were removed last week from the Foreign Affairs and Transport Select Committees, groups that scrutinize government policy. Blair's government was believed behind the firings. Blair's Commons allies were largely loyal to the party in its first term in government, which ended 18 years of Conservative rule in the 1997 election. But the dismissals prompted anger as the members of Parliament insisted it was undemocratic for the government to select who can investigate its actions. Lawmakers responded by voting 301 to 232 and 308 to 221 to reject the recommended lineups of the committees that did not include Anderson or Dunwoody. The government later said that it will offer a new list of committee members that will include Anderson and Dunwoody,'' the government's Chief Whip Hilary Armstrong's office said.
