Hello everyone,

I have a new (used) Compaq LTE 5000 laptop. Doing
my linux install is proving to be a challenge.
Of course this is to be expected since laptops are
laptops. I have been to the "Linux Laptops" page
and done my research. Notes on the install to
date follow:

1) Distribution: The LTE 5000 uses a hot swapable
FD/CDROM and does not support booting from the
CDROM. I could not hot swap from FD to CDROM using
the Storm Linux (SL2000) or Corel Linux boot disk
& CDROM combination. I ended up going with Debian
since I could run the boot.bat from the CD and
install without having to use a boot floppy. This
would be a great thing for SL2000 to do!!

2) lilo and Win98: Debian's lilo config script
that runs as part of the install does not allow
you to add other OS options and does not detect
them. You must do this later. Since I could not
make a boot disk (hot swap limitation) as part of
the install, I either had to let lilo set itself
up or manually make a boot disk (not the rescue
disk) before getting back to finish the install. I
chose to let lilo set itself up. Thank you guys
for the posts on Sunday reminding me of how to
manually re-config lilo for dual boot.

I found out that no running fdisk /mbr from a
Win98 boot disk did not return boot functionality
of /dev/hda1 my "DOS" part. I even did the sys c:
followed by fdisk /mbr to make sure I have system
files. I have no problems using lilo and actually
prefer it.

3) Since I have been using SL2000 and Corel Linux
at the office, I am spoiled by the nice graphical
boot menu. Does anyone know of any packages that
will let me make my own for my new Debian Laptop?
