Framebuffer manipulations using /dev/fbdev manipulations will permit
booting to a self-defined "graphics" screen. I'm using the fbdev to
support the two heads of my Matrox G400, but haven't had the inclination
to wizard-up a boot-screen.
Check /usr/src/linux/Documentation/fb/framebuffer.txt for starters.
