Actually, yes you can do it on a Mac. Just requires a bit of resource
hacking. Lots of tools out there do it for you.

As to your rant, it's because that's about the extent of my knowledge having
never done it. Your description actually sounds like the Mandrake startup
(they display a penguin with the boot messages below it). You might ask them
what they did (don't expect an answer. getting info out of them is like
pulling a tooth from a great white) or look at their distro to see if you
can see anything that stands out at you.
