Cliff,

I too tried using a D: drive once will trying to install a Red Hat version.
Not much luck there. It never recognized the CDROM where the rest of the
RPM load was. A Solution was to keep Linux on its on drive, yet still
maintain a Win O/S platform computer. The Solution was to use Cold swappable
drives in the C: slot. When I boot to STORMIX it has its own drive and no
other O/S on the machine. When I logout of linux and shutdown the PC, I pull
the HD out plug the Win95 Drive in and boot as normal-- sure keeps thing
separate.

For some reason, the stormlinux.com domain stopped resolving, which caused
no one to be able to mail the list. The problem should be fixed now.
Sorry for any inconvenience.

No one should have to resubscribe -- I don't think anyone has been removed,
there just have been no messages, as no one was able to send any...

Perhaps you should buy a Linux book it sounds like you lack the basics. You
will need to boot the CDROM with the bootdisk or buy telling the BIOS to
boot
the cdrom during boot at minimum... ie... windows will not be running when
you
install.

Hey group. Glad you're back! ;-)
Here's a copy of an e-mail I sent a storm compatriot earlier today
when the list was 'down'. If anyone else has an idea what I can do
to get hail on my old machine, do tell!
_________

Okay, here I go. I've been running 'rain' for a couple of
months just fine! I wanted to install 'hail' (downloaded and
burned the image on cd) but very early it checks for devices on
my system then says "No PCI devices found" and prompts me to
click either 'help' or 'next'. This is a similar step that takes
place on 'rain'. I click next (because it's correct -- there are
no other devices on my machine) and it hangs. I tried again and
clicked 'help' but it still hangs there.
This didn't happen when installing 'rain'. What do I do? I've
tried both the graphical and text installs.
By the way, I'm running it on a 486-DX4-S (blazing speed!)
with a Trident GUI9440 vid card. CD-ROM works fine. 10 G
harddrive. Like I said, 'rain' is working fine on this system (as
is redhat6.2) so I'm not sure what the 'hangup' is.
I love storm and want hail! :) Thanks again, gang!

I know storm isn't designed for laptops. But I was
wondering if someone might be able to give me some
insight. I have an old IBM thinkpad that I would like
to install Storm on. It has either a floppy or a
CD-Rom in it at one time, but not both. You can't boot
off the CD either. Any suggestions on how to get storm
on this thing? It has a 1 GB HD and 340 is taken up
with Win98 at the moment. Once I get Storm on and
working I plan on deleting that partition as well and
converting the entire laptop to Storm.

Actually the problem is that linux won't see your CD(CDROM).It doesn't
matter that it will boot from it.When you boot you boot at BIOS level
and if the BIOS detects an ATAPI drive it will boot from it,regardless
what it is.It is an issue with the IDE contoller-CDROM interaction
or simply a CDROM problem.IT may as well be a bad CD but...
In order to test you have to go to a console after starting install
when you get that choose isntall media (press CTRL ALT F1-4 till you
find a free console,I think 2 is free).
Now type

dmesg | more

you should see somewhere after the ide contorller is detected a list
of all your drives, including the CDROM.
Now if this works and you see the CDROM I will assume your cdrom is hdc
Check if you can mount the CDROM manually

cd /
mkdir cdrom
mount -r -t auto /dev/hdc /cdrom
cd /cdrom
ls
you should see a list of files.
try cd 'ing through directories and do ls 's to see if the CD is beeing
read.
if that works I would say 90% that is a problem with the storm installer
not detecting your cdrom.
Now one probelm with the old Pentium is that you're using an old
propietary CDROM with it's interface and I haven't seen anywhere in the
Storm installer the option to insert the module for it as Debian
installer have.I don't have experiwence with these old CDROM's so even
if you can manually insert the module with insmod I don't know what
device it will be or if you can restart the instalation process.Somebody
may know.
Now with the Compaq.Compaq is using lately some really cheapo CDROM's,
noname. They used to have LG's before and even those aren't such high
quallity.
Also if you have the second partition labeled system_save and you don't
have one or 2 BLUE restore CD's DON'T delete anything from there or you
won't be able to restore the unit unless you call Compaq.Even then
almost
all of the last year and this years Compaq's had a problem with the
modem driver not beeing on the restore CD.You should save the cpqdrv
directory
from D and burn it to a CD.I made a CD for the modem problem even before
Compaq aknowledged the problem (and they didn't too soon).
Is there by any chance the one with SIS chipset(shared RAM for video)?
That chipset is also known to cause problems.

Well anyway start with the Compaq follow my sugestions and we should be
able to identify the problem.THen when you call Storm tech support
you'll
be more prepared. The problem is that Stormix is using binaries for
install
not simple shell scripts and I don't have the time now to go through the
sources and see exactly what are they doing and fork a few things. At
least
that's what I saw on the CD-binary for sinstall.

If you want to try the ftp install from another computer I'll post on my
webpage by the end of this weekwaht yuo ahve to do to use the CD as a
source for ftp install. You'll still ahve to download a 36MB file from
the Stormix ftp and install an ftp server on one computer but this
shouldn't be such a huge problem if you have a NIC in each computer
(even a$20Canadains elcheapo NIC will do).

Well post back now that the mailing list is working.:-)

Actually hail works on laptops. If yuo check the archive there is a
post on how it was done with a similar laptop aka one drive at a time.

An idea, why don't you just use
apt-get update
apt-get upgrade

 with sources CDROM ?
Does the 486 see the whole 10 GB or are you running some kind of
lowlevel utility?

There are various install methods besides install from a local CD. You
can copy data to a Dos/Windows partiton, set up a network connection
with a PCMCIA card, set up a newwork with PLIP with a laplink cable and
the parallel port, and even use an external CD drive with either a
PCMCIA or parallel port support. Details will depend on the methods that
are available to you.

I believe what Mircea is saying is that he would like to use the CD in his
own network for ftp installs to other machines. This would be nice, as I am
a Sys Admin and could use this feature. Is this possible with the CD rather
than going to the download sites and ftping from there.

It seems the non-US directory on the ftp server has a really non-standard
layout. instead of:

debian-non-US/dists/potato/non-US

with the appropriate binary directories and packages listings below there,
it's set up like this:

debian-non-US/dists/potato/non-US/main
debian-non-US/dists/potato/non-US/contrib
debian-non-US/dists/potato/non-US/non-free

with binary directories and package listings below each dir.

So my sources for apt-get and SPM don't work.

Can someone fix?

Thanks.

PS: Still having problems with SAS and SPM as reported on the beta lists
previously.

own network for ftp installs to other machines. This would be nice, as I am
a Sys Admin and could use this feature. Is this possible with the CD rather
than going to the download sites and ftping from there.

Yeap.I did it finally. You need to download the 36 MB's file from the
disks-i386/current and create that directory wherever you copy the
content of the CD.At least that's how i did it and worked.I was angry
because I wouldn't have t odo that if the file would've been
there.Actually I was
mounitng originally the iso using the loop device and if the file
would've been there.....oh well..maybe at next release.Till then youhave
to creaste
a local mirror, not a bad idea anyway since a HDD will be obviously
faster than a CDROM.:-)

I never thought of that -- thanks.
As for my hard drive -- it can see 8.4 of it but I am running EZ BIOS
that has it see all 10.2G. It's been working fine so far (that can
always change!). Thanks for the thoughts.
