for some reason the apt-get dist-upgrade does not remove the old SAS and
associated components/libraries. Do it manually for now. I also installed
the new SAS manually afterward apt-get install task-apt (I think).

don't remember that one.

Yes, for whatever reason, these three packages were kept back. haven't got a
clue why. I haven't checked the versions so maybe they didn't need
upgrading.

Try removing all the .gnome* directories in your home directory and then run
X again. I had problems getting sawfish to come up default as well, but it
may be easier for you.

again, kill all .gnome directories and you'll see it.
