The saga continues.
I have a PC with two hard drives, hda is the master drive and runs
Windows, hdb is where Storm is located
I have the recent Deluxe commercial version of Storm (hail, potato). I
did an apt-get dist-upgrade in order to upgrade a few files from the
ftp.stormix.com. (Actually it was about 40 mb). During the upgrade, I
was prompted and indicated (if I recall correctly) that I should use
the original location for lilo on the boot sector, and to use the
existing lilo.conf settings.

I rebooted, and Linux worked just fine. No problem at all.

Then I rebooted into Windows. It started, but then scandisk popped up
telling me that there were problems with hard drive C (hda). During the
surface scan, scandisk noted that drive C was about to fail, data can
be read, but it takes much longer than it should. During the scan, it
moved clusters to different sectors of the hard drive, and marked the
affected sectors as bad. There were about 30 bad clusters in different
sectors of the disk. It hung when it was 19% done, with a message that
there was a problem with the boot sector.

If I restart now, the only way to get into Linux, is by booting with the
install CD. The only way to get into the Windows drive, is with a boot
diskette which will give me a DOS prompt.
My wife assumes, that this is all my doing and that I am a real dummy.
I would prefer to think that the hda (drive C) just died on us (not
that that is a good thought, it just helps me maintain a bit of
self-dignity). The BIOS now reads on start-up: SMART failure predicted
on primary master; IMMEDIATELY BACK UP.

Assuming that my wife is correct, how should I reinstall lilo and get
the two systems to boot? Since I upgraded, I think that the version of
lilo on my hard drive may be different from the one I have from the
recent upgrade.

Assuming that I am correct, I am thinking I will remove both hard
drives, and reinstall Windows on a new hard drive. Then, I will put the
bad DOS drive back in as a slave drive, copy over my documents, etc,
and then yank the bad DOS drive, and put my linux drive back in. If I
do this, I still have a similar dilemma. How do I reinstall lilo in the
boot sector of the new DOS drive so that I get the boot menu where I
select windows (default) or linux?

Thanks,
Glen
