I don't want to install the complete gnome desktop. I don't use gnome
and don't have unlimited hard disk space.
Any other suggestions

Yep, I had the same problem! Here's what fixed it for me.
1. Open an XTerm (or whatever terminal you want).
2. Become root.
3. Type the following:
lynx -source http://spidermonkey.helixcode.com/go-gnome | sh
4. Follow the options that the site gives you. (I did the upgrade
option, not the core or full install.)
5. After I completed my upgrade, sawfish was broken (held back by apt).
I fixed it by doing apt-get dist-upgrade.
6. Reboot.
After all of that is done, you can get the correct version of
libglib1.2-dev using apt-get or Stormpkg.
