I'm not too familiar with KDE to know what changes where made between KDE1
and KDE2 (I use Gnome). However, you want to modify the master session file
for gdm. The session files for xdm are different. For GDM you want to modify
the file for KDE located in:

/etc/gdm/Sessions/

To take whatever appropriate action is required for KDE2.

Aren't there some debs for KDE2 for Debian Potato? If you used those, all
the changes should have been done for you.
