Perhaps a better way which only involves changing a file in your home
directory is to change (or create if it is not there) a file called
.xsession - simply make sure all it contains is the one word 'startkde'
(without the apostrophes, or course!).

When you log on with gdm, chose the 'Debian' option and you will get kde.
