You don't need to know either and you don't need to use alien. A version of
this driver is already available in .deb format. Take a look using Storm
Package Manager and filter for 3dfx. Search for Glide for the other stuff.

If you're using XFree86 4, you'll need to update your sources to point to
Woody. You can install XF4 and the 3dfx stuff right from there.
