The only time I use usb is with my scanner, which is once every 2 weeks.
So I do not want to have usb as part of the kernel. The problem with
having it as a module means that every the scanner is to be used, I have
to modprobe scanner. I know that it is simple enough, but I am not the
only one who uses this machine. So if anyone wants to use the scanner,
they have to get me to come and bring up term, su, modprobe, upload
firmware. Linux knows to insert the correct modules for my cdrom,
floppy, etc when ever I mount them, etc. but if I try and upload
firmware or run sane w/o usb* inserted, then sane cannot find scanner,
etc.
I thought about a script which inserted the modules, uploaded firmware,
rmmod usb*. Then placing the script in a startup directory init.d or
whatever. But this does not solve problem of sane not finding the
scanner.
There must be a config/resource file which linux checks? Or a way that
regular users can be allowed to modprobe/insmod certain modules. This
way I could write a script which would make sure modules were in place
and then have the script call scanimage

none of the files in /etc/modutils contain entries re: usb or scsi,
should I make a file (ie. echo modprobe scanner > scanner.txt)?
'modconf' just gives me the option of loading or unloading drivers. I
can do that with commandline, or am I using it wrong?
Thanks for help in advance
