If you really need to get into formula type-setting and long thesis
documents, I'd *really* recommend lyx (www.lyx.org). On Debian
unstable, there's a fairly recent package for that one. It's
basically a front-end for LaTeX. If you do scientific papers, you
should *really, really* try it :-)
For real WYSIWIG, I'd recommend the new AbiWord (version 0.7.12), it
supports everything but tables, for slow but feature-complete
WYSIWIG, StarOffice isn't a bad choice. All of these programs are
either free as in speech or as in beer, and all are going to be
"really" free in the near future.
