Okay, before you tell me to RTFM, I want to say that I read the kppp FAQ. I did
what it suggested but still have the problem. To wit:
I just loaded Storm Linux 2000 (Hail 2.06) onto my PC. I've tried Stormix
several times in the past (I have four of the previous CD's) and this was the
first time I could get it to work (after having tried it on four different
PC's). This time, however, things went pretty much without a hitch.
Except for kppp. I get the infamous "Timeout expired while waiting for the PPP
interface to come up." The feedback from the connection went like this:
ATZ
OK
ATM0L0
OK
ATDT7136259909
CONNECT 50666/ARQ/V90/LAPM/V42BIS
.. and then I get the error. It sounds like it is trying to connect normally
and, just about the time you think it is going to establish the connection, it
cuts off and presents the error message.
The kppp FAQ suggests:
1. Make sure pppd is not a script. (I checked. It's not. It's in
/usr/sbin/pppd and is a binary executable, not a script).
2. chmod u+s pppd as root. (I know you should avoid setuid but I did it
anyway.)
3. Be sure there are no conflicts in the options file. (My /etc/ppp/options
file is attached for your review. I didn't find any conflicts but maybe you
might.)
4. Use the "real" device. (/dev/modem seemed to work, but I switched it to
/dev/ttyS1 anyway).
5. Be sure the permissions are correct. (I was running as root.)
6. Early launching? (No, my ISP has been up and running for years.)
Incidentally, I couldn't tail /var/log/messages because the file didn't exist.
The Stormix FAQ suggested
apt-get update kppp
This seems like a catch 22 because you can't apt-get until you get kppp working.
Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get my box on the Internet so that I
can apt-get update the system?
Thanks in advance.
Ron
