Thanks for all of the suggestions. The solution was simple in the end. Changed the 
link for X using
ln -i -s /usr/bin/X11/XFree86 /etc/X11/X
Anyway, problems are nearly solved. Now for XDM. I removed gdm in the upgrade. Now I 
get a menu that is not really a menu. Just says "Debian GNU/Linux (storm)"  and has a 
Login and Password
It starts KDE by default. I would rather have it start Gnome by default, and have the 
option to start KDE at times. Also, I would like a shutdown or restart option. Any 
suggestions would be appreciated. (At this point, I'm just glad I didn't have to 
reinstall from scratch).
