First of all, THANKS to Mike and Linux Guy, their advice was timely and
correct. I got the kernel to compile properly, make a .deb file, and
install it.

Unfortunately, I got a kernel panic upon reboot. The specific message
was:

modprobe: Can't open dependencies file
/lib/modules/2.2.18pre21/modules.dep

... Fortunately, I had the good sense to keep a boot floppy, and hence
can boot the system using the old kernel.

Now we can address the question of the modules.dep file.

I had run make-kpkg modules_image before dpkg'ing the .deb file for the
new kernel. Didn't that handle the modules.dep file issue? If not,
what does?

Thanks a bunch guys. I hope to make this my first SMP kernel
installation. If I can do this, then I have no reason to go back to
RedHat, Mandrake, and the like.

Cheers,

Ron
