java.sql.Date formatting problem

Hi all
I've the following problem:
if I try to use
<fmt:formatDate value="${currentCalendar.validityEnd}" type="date"/>
nothing is displayed.

validityEnd is of type java.sql.Date (and not null) what shoud I do to format it ?
