I'm not relying on the back button. Believe me, I wish it wasn't there.

It is and the user will use it..........

i'm trying to recover from it in a reasonable way.

Show 'em a "is this info correct?" page and take it from there. Relying
on the "back" button to do anything useful is a bad idea--how would you
know what the appropriate action is if it's resubmitted? For credit
cards it would do a re-charge. Or they could be added to a mailing list
twice, or whatever.

If they hit the "back" button and re-busmit it sounds like you want
struts to automagically do an "update," not a "create," or something.
