Hello Phil,

The Queen's College Cambridge dial indicates along the left side the time of
sunrise (ortus solis) and on the right the length of the day (longitudo). But
there are no hour lines referenced to sunrise or sunset through the day. I see
no Babylonian or Italian hour lines even when I zoom in on my own photos this
remarkable dial. See "Timelines" at www.walkingshadow.info.

  Hello Roger,

How about the well-known Queens College, Cambridge dial, erected in 1642 ?

    Hello Mike,

I have seen no responses to your note on sundials in Britain showing hours
from sunrise or sunset. Does this mean there are none? I remember the display
of vertical sundials at Greenwich in 1980 showing many different hours but
these were not historical dials. I did not find this exhibit on a visit to
Greenwich after the BSS last year. Pity as this exhibit spiked my curiosity and
influenced the presentation I gave at the BSS and earlier NASS conference on
"Timelines". This is available to download at a personal website
www.walkingshadow.info

I was pleased to design a west facing dial recently showing Hours to Sunset
and leave the design and a prototype as a small "gift for house". We enjoyed
many warm sunsets on the Algarve coast this November. These timelines are valid
solar times that should be included on modern dials. We have to get past the
clock fixation and show real solar times.

I know of no historical sundials in North America showing hours related to
sunrise or sunset. I guess we follow the British and French traditions more
than the Italian or continental influences.

    Regards, Roger Bailey

      Dear Sundial Friends,
I have been asked if I know of any pre-1800 English dials, fixed or
portable, that show scales with 'hours from sunrise' or 'hours to sunset'.
These occur on some Continental dials, but as far as I know, there are none
from England - or are there???

A Happy New Year to All on the Sundial List.,

      Mike Cowham
