Dear John,

That is a great dial. I really must look
into this glass-based colouring that you
use. I can testify to its durability.
The six dials on the Gate of Honour at
Gonville and Caius College are made with
this technology and their colours look
almost as good as new after the better
part of 50 years.

Are you using local sun time or are you
allowing some offset from the reference
time zone meridian? I can't quite tell
whether the 1 o'clock line is vertical!

This is true though not as bad as low sun
when you have trees and neighbouring
buildings to contend with.

The very first sundial I had a hand in
was for a house with large overhanging
eaves. The client's adviser showed me
a photograph and I said the eaves could
be a problem.

The adviser then pointed out that the
wall was almost direct east facing so
would see the sun at sunrise and for
the early morning hours. I then asked
about trees and neighbouring buildings.

"Oh, no problem", said the adviser,
"the client has his private airstrip
leading up to that wall of the house
so it is pretty clear of obstructions!"

All the best

Frank
