This is possibly a bug introduced in the yuvfile program in 4.0 that's used to put up things like the insert smartcard icon. Aside from packet loss, can you determine if your network is saturated? Perhaps you can try replacing yuvfile in 4.0 with the one from 3.1 just as a test. (I'm not sure if there were other changes that went along with that.)
