WRT to the Acrobat issue, it used to be the that plugin only searched the PATH for the acroread binary. Creating a symlink for acroread in /usr/bin solves this problem.

The install might change a few links (ie /usr/bin/soffice) but I can't recall. Worst case you will need to remove/re-install OOo.

I have had users report that they are unable to open Acrobat files (i.e. .pdf files) but I don't see a problem doing from the Nautilus file explorer myself. I think they are seeing the problem from Firefox...

This sounds like it could be a plugin issue - check that it has been installed:

# ln -s /usr/lib/AdobeReader/Browser/sparcsolaris/nppdf.so /path/to/firefox/plugins

I'd suggest re-installing the StarOffice packages, updating the mime-database and seeing if that fixes the issue.

When we install OpenOffice.org on our Sun Ray servers we typically remove the StarOffice icons and edit /usr/share/applications/star.desktop to reflect OOo. We haven't had any issues doing it this way.

In your earlier note you asked about Acrobat - is that file association broken also?

Theron,

Thanks for the response...

I did remove the StarOffice packages before installing OpenOffice. Do you think this is what broke the file associations and is there any way to fix it? What I'm finding is that the file associations for .doc and .xls files works but not for .odt or .ods and other file types.
Thanks again for any more advice you or anyone else can provide...

I am doing some Gnome reading about the mime database, etc. to see if I can't figure this out.

Does anyone know if file associations can be controlled through the Sun Desktop manager?

TIA,

I know that for OpenOffice.org there are a few extra steps to configure file associations. After installing OOo, update the mime database:
   root# update-mime-database /usr/share/mime

Then, ensure nautilus launches OOo instead of StarOffice
   root# ln -s /usr/bin/openoffice.org-2.3 /usr/bin/staroffice

One thing I've tried to do in the past was remove the StarOffice pkgs
but that only broke file associations in bad way.

Hope that helps.

Hello,

We have a Sun Ray user base installed of about 20 users currently. One problem I am constantly having complaints about is that users are having issues with the JDS desktop regarding file assocations. I know this is not necessarily Sun Ray specific, but thought that someone on this list must have had to deal with this. Basically, a typical problem is that the user will use the "File Browser" to find a file. Say, for example the file is an OpenOffice document with a ".odt" file extension. After double-clicking on the file the user gets a "No Action Associated" pop-up saying:

"There is not action associated with "<file>.odt". You can configure GNOME to associate applications with file types. Do you want to associate an application with this file type now?"
      [Cancel] [Associate Application]

The problem is that most of our users are not JDS guru's or even Solaris guru's and do not know which program or even if they know the program they don't know the full path to the program to create the assocation. We see similar problems with .pdf files, etc.

I have a simple Sun Ray configuration with two Sun Ray servers. Both are running Solaris 10 11/06 with the latest patch cluster installed through October.

Does anyone on this list have experience or know-how for setting up file associations for JDS on a *global *basis for a server? I would like a method by which I can setup all of the file extensions and associate them with specific applications (i.e. OpenOffice, Acroread, etc) for both of my Sun Ray servers so that my users can just double-click on these file icons in the File Browser window and the proper application will automatically open the file.

Any help or pointers would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance...
-Ken
