Both the keyboard and mouse issue were fixed by the installation of the
xkb-data-legacy package.

ln -s /usr/share/fonts/X11/misc /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/misc
(as the debian sid doc mentions) apt-get install xkb-data-legacy
