One thing you can do, and security people might be happy about,
is setting up a VPN (Cisco ASA, Linux/Raccoon, etc.), which
the SR2 and newer clients can directly log into.

This would generally need a few IP protocols to be opened, and
a pre-determined set, at that.

I think there were some tricks to limit the ports and make the
firewalls happy, but maybe I am mistaking products (RPC stuff
is also dynamic and needs lots of "love" to pass security).
