If there is a lot of spare space on your hard drive, the physical location
where your old data was stored may not have been overwritten by the new
file. In other words, the OS writes the new data to a different location
on the disk and then points the disk directory entry at the new files,
leaving the old material still there, but with no disk directory entry, so
there is no way for you to access the old stuff.

Utilities such as Norton Disk Doctor (I think File Recovery or some such)
and I think Tech Tool Pro have the ability to resurrect these "lost" files.

To increase your chances of getting them back, do not engage in any
activity on that machine which writes to that disk, until you have had a
chance to run one of those recovery utilities. Your chances aren't great,
but if you lost something like text, you may be able to get most of it
back. If it is the type of file where you need the whole file in order for
any of the contents to be useable, your chances are lower but still
non-zero.
