I believe that's the same problem I had some time ago with my C500--I replaced my HD
and did a clean install of store-bought OS 9.1.  At that point, I lost the CD-ROM.
People on this list helped me fix it, but I disremember the exact problem.  I know it
had something to do with the fact that I didn't do an incremental upgrade of the OS.
The solution was to replace OS 9's Apple CD-ROM/DVD extension with Apple CD-ROM from
OS 7.6 .  After that, it worked fine.
