You ought to be able to download a Disk Tools floppy from somewhere on 
Apple's site for 8.5 that will boot your computer - darned if I could 
find it in a 15 min search though - I don't have a registered AppleID so 
I guess I don't count. Apple's site has become so annoying. If you can't 
find a copy, I can email you one (hopes apple lawyers aren't watching). 
It's about 1.4mb in size and you need a MacOS computer and a copy of 
Diskcopy to actually make the floppy that will boot the machine. The 
only utils on it are drive set-up and disk first aid, but it should let 
you determine if the HD is the culprit.
