Seem to have worked around this voodoo that cropped up with the external SCSI bus. I moved the offending drive to the SCSI bus on machine #2 and can access it on my network.
I now do remember having a weird SCSI bus problem back over 8 years ago with the same external drive on a Mac Plus. Finally solved it by removing the terminator from the external drive.
