I have a few questions I couldn't find an adequate answer for using Google
before I purchase a processor upgrade for my S900:
1. Can anyone think of any reasons why a PowerLogix G3 900MHz ZIF in an XLR8
CarrierZIF SSE (six-slot enabled) won't work in a S900? PowerLogix says it
should work, but they won't provide tech support for it.

I have looked into doing this and talked about it here a bit. It looks like it will work. The bus speed is set by dip switches on the bottom of the Zif and the multiplier/ cpu settings in software using powerlogix's "CPU Director" However the bus dip switch settings 50- 60 MHz range are unknown at this time. So you would have to just play around with it and see what works! A wrong setting should just not boot rather then harm anything. Powerlogix has told me i can do this and they will honor the 30 day money back warranty. Also the 2 year replace or repair warranty would be honored. It seems the dip switches on the carrier card would likely all be set to off. A guy on the XPFacto list just ordered one so may soon have some info on what works.
2. Is the XLR8 CarrierZIF SSE (MPe) required to use ZIFs in the S900 or can
I get away with the cheaper XLR8 CarrierZIF?

Only the Apple 6 PCI slot machines require the more expensive carrier card which was designed for them. The S900/J700 will work fine with either card.
3. Can anyone give me a straight answer about why there aren't any more XLR8
Mach Velocity + CarrierZIF dual G4 upgrades anymore? I've only been able to
find two answers, one was a one-sentence explanation by XLR8 that they
couldn't ever get it to work properly with OS X, though there are reviews
that state the opposite, and the other is that Apple changed the
multiprocessor architecture, which doesn't explain why OS 9.2.2 (os9helper
install) detects (in Apple System Profiler) and uses dual processors (no
visible slowdown while decompressing the gcc source tarball and web browsing
simultaneously) on my Daystar nPower dual 604e @ 180MHz.

The short answer was correct. It wasn't possible to get them to work correctly in all machines they were designed for. They did work in some hardware setups and others nearly the same they didn't. In fact the failure of these CPU's was i believe the main cause of XLR8 to close up shop until they were sold and reopened under the current name.
4. How much and what type of modification does it take to use a PC
Socket7/370/A heasink/fan on a Macintosh ZIF socket? I'm not going to
passively cool anything faster than 350MHz.

I'm not sure what the connectors are on that set up. You can easily hook up any fan with the same connectors as a hard drive. Also the motherboard has the small 2 or 3 pin fan plug used on many PC's. I wouldn't try using the PC heat sink but a fan on the carrier card heat sink is fine. I am running a Carrier card with G3 500 MHz over-clocked to 550 MHz for 2 years now. Runs at 36- 42 C. No fan on the heat sink. I did however add a second fan to the cage area which was built for one. It is a part of the hard drive holder slot on the front of the machine where a hard drive fits vertically. Small 2/3 pin fan connector marked for fan on the motherboard right next to the fan cage.
Best of luck if you try the Powerlogix Zif let us now how it goes. It's been about a week since the XPFacto guy ordered the Zif so will pass on any info i get from him. I also want to try one of these but have to wait for a while. I hope the sale price is still around by the time I have the extra money ;-) Will S
