Thanks for your help! My cd-rom drive is now working. Whew!
I do intend to purchase more RAM but read that in the S900 the sticks have to be installed in pairs... Am I understanding that to mean I need two of whatever RAM sticks I buy? (I don't recall a double-em-up rule when I upgraded the RAM on my G3!) I'd like to go ahead and get at least 128 MB.
The sticks do not have to be installed in pairs, but if you do, you will gain maybe 10% performance benefit due to the memory controllers interleaving of the RAM. Some upgrade cards have problems when the RAM *IS* interleaved. Others on this list are more knowledgeable about this than I.
The 2nd hard drive doesn't spin up at all and the Drive Setup utility doesn't see it either. I see the fan case in front of it is empty, but there are two working fans in the upper portion of the case.
If the drive does not physically spin up and the power cable is correctly inserted, then I would guess that it has gone to HD heaven. As a last resort, you might try another power lead just to double check...
I do have an extra external hard drive so I'm not too worried about space, but I am going to look for the SCSI-Probe utility. That sounds like a useful utility to have around.
All in all, I'm pretty happy now with it. It seems like a good deal for 4 bucks and one Sunday's worth of work. We won't be using it for the internet, just word-processing and some games. My son is very happy with it!
:)
