I don't know if you tried the latest version of Safari...I've timed it against Netscape, IE, Mozilla and it is by far, the fastest browser to navigate in. Mozilla is very similar to Netscape as they use the same "engine" (?) but it has a lot more preference settings, so is much more customizable. The most current version of Safari is really great and it has become my browser. In the earlier versions there were some problems with some sites like banks, where log-on didn't work. The current version-1.0 (v85) has not given me any problems and I haven't had to revert to any of the other browsers for the last few months.
Safari and Mozilla/Firebird/Chimera are based on two different rendering engines. Mozilla and kin (including Netscape) use Gecko, an open source engine while Safari is based on KHTML, the foundation behind the Konqueror Linux browser which is the default browser in the KDE desktop environment.
