I have to agree in my very unscientific tests that Safari seems quicker that other browsers, especially downloading via ftp protocol.
I find Anarchy (now Interarchy) to be much faster than any of the Classic compatible browsers for downloading. I haven't tried Safari, so I don't know how it compares there. I often Opt-click and hold on download links, then choose copy link to clipboard and paste it into Anarchy for downloading.
