I have a version of Disk Warrior that says it will work on an OS X
disk. I think I've used my Nortons Disk Doctor 5 on my X drive also. I
have a couple of versions of Tech Tools also. I recall a few months ago
there was some discussion about utilities programs that trashed the OS X
drives. Which ones work and which ones are bad?

Disk Warrior 2.1 is okay, it does not work in X, but you can repair OS X volumes from OS 9. Works perfectly (at least for me).
Stay away from Norton, personally, I've had bad experiences with it through all system versions since Mac OS 8, but the most recent OS X version seems to be even worse.
