As for mixing 2k and 4k, the answer would have to be kindof vague - would depend on so many variables whether or not this would cause a problem. Should not be a problem most of the time ?
I'm gonna duck for the incoming rebuttals....
This topic does indeed generate a, ahem, wide variety of reported experinces. I agree with Alan, in that properly functioning memory should work just fine even if you mix 2K and 4K memory in the same machine.
It should not be a problem any more than using different sizes of DIMMs in the same machine causes problems. I wrote an excruciatingly long post about memory addressing modes a long while back that discusses this in detail.
The gist is that 2K and 4K really has more to do with the scheme that the computer must use to address that particular stick fo memory. The computer is supposed to adjust each DIMM slot's addressing scheme to whatever DIMM is installed in each slot. The S900 supports addressing schemes for both 2K and 4K refresh memory, so should have those schemes available for each slot, as needed.
An 8 MB DIMM uses a different addressing scheme from a 32 MB DIMM, uses a different addressing scheme from a 128 MB DIMM, etc. So mixing 2K and 4K should not be any more of a strain on the machine, than mixing different sizes of DIMMs in the same machine.
All that said, there is some sub-par memory out there and some slow memory out there, and it can cause problems that people may then blame on the mixing of memory types. It is also possible that the memory addressing in the S900 does not always work the way it should, but I've found ti to be very reliable with thoroughly tested memory.
