years, and never at all with a combo Firewire/USB card. What's the exact
problem? Is the card not recognized, is it recognized by the OS but
hardware connected to it isn't recognized, can you not boot with it
installed, or... ? Did you press the CUDA Reset button on the logic board
after installing the card?

I have a C600 with a Firewire/USB card from CompUSA. Works great. But a bit of a back story here worth telling knowing The Exalted Kennedy (all respond: Most blessed is he) is lurking and occasionally decloaking...

I bought the Adaptec DuoConnect card initially since it was a USB 2.0/FW 400 card and it's Adaptec--hey, they're always cool with Macs. My C600 was already running OS 9.1 with a Sonnet G3 400 L2 processor upgrade. Quite happily, I might add. Oh, yes, the other two PCI slots are filled with an ATI Rage pro video card and the Asante 10BaseT card that came with the machine.

Upon adding the Duo Connect card, I saw the external power connector on the card and decided it probably wouldn't hurt to ensure there would be power on the bus. Made sure the card was properly seated and all connections were tight and pressed the CUDA for the mandatory 30 odd seconds while chanting an imprecatory psalm that all would be well. Rebooted and checked the Apple System Profiler to see how the new card showed up. It showed up as an ethernet card of all things. Not good.

I then started plugging in a couple of USB devices and they all were readily recognized. I then tried plugging in a Sony FW CD burner. No go. Of course I had all the proper extensions loaded for Firewire but there was simply no response. I emailed Adaptec tech support but, quite surprisingly, their response was less than stellar or even helpful and they basically said you can return the card for a refund. Since I was running a Wintel box as a router/gateway for my satellite internet access, I just put the card in that and Win2k picked it up immediately without a burp.

The post-mortem on the DuoConnect in the 600 as Jeff W. and me discussed on the list was the card required a PCI 2.1 or later logic and the C600 likely did not meet that specification. The dirt cheap CompUSA FW/USB 1.1 card played (and continues to play) quite happily in the C600, apparently able to tolerate whatever PCI logic is on board the 600. I just found it troubling that Adaptec did not make it more specific on their packaging what Mac models likely would not play nicely with this card. It just said Macs with OS 8.6 or better with a free PCI slot.

The short story long here is that the C series mobo is quirkier than originally thought.
