1.  I would guess that this software enables the backside cache, but I've
never used any Sonnet products.  If I'm right (which would surprise me -- it
seems too simple), the processor card would work "fine" but without an L2
cache.

2.  I've seen this with aging power supplies, although that's not the only
possible explanation.  Have you found any correlation between how long the
computer has been off and whether or not you need to do this?  If it's been
on for an hour or so, can you restart and have it come up *without* having
to restart it yet again?

3.  Can't really speak to that.  I haven't used a C-series machine for
years, and never at all with a combo Firewire/USB card.  What's the exact
problem?  Is the card not recognized, is it recognized by the OS but
hardware connected to it isn't recognized, can you not boot with it
installed, or... ?  Did you press the CUDA Reset button on the logic board
after installing the card?
