I think I'm going to make the G3/500mhz S900 my desk machine, replacing a G3/300mhz PowerCenter150, and put the server process that the S900 used to run on one of my G4/500 Beige machines permanently. Time to play "musical computers"...

Just grasping at straws here, but sometimes the PRAM doesn't clear on the first attempt; it is usually recommended to repeat three times in succession to assure that it is completely reset. I only mention it because it is not clear from your account whether this is how you went about it. Also, it has been noted that there is a difference in what NVRAM gets reset depending on the exact timing of when the keys are pressed. Besides the PRAM there is something which Apple calls just the NVRAM that is _supposed_ to be reserved for networking info, but is sometimes accessed by other processes. This can be reset by pressing cmd-opt-P-R within a second after the start of the chime; PRAM is cleared if the keys are pressed any time during the chime.
It's also possible that a bad connection is causing repeated corruption of the memory, even after it is cleared.
Thanks for the suggestions from all that sent replies. I'm going to give some of them a try soon and see what I can do to get this machine back online. I'll let y'all know the results.
