I'm not sure if this is an issue with 56K modems, but a DSL modem can be corrupted by light dimmers in the house in a part on position- even if on a different circuit. Paul C

It happened quite quickly that when connected to the internet with Microsoft IE, (sorry head in hands looking at the floor) I kept getting disconnected after various lengths of time - 1minute, 20 secs, 15 minutes. I tried Netscape and for a couple of times and it was fine, then...

A few suggestions not related to viruses;

Maybe you can also suspect your dialup ISP and the phone lines to your house.
AOL is notorious for constant disconnects.

Also, if at all possible, try switching to a different phone outlet for your modem to
see if there might be a problem inside your house.
To make sure, you can run a line directly from the service interface box to your modem.

If you have an aerial phone line (one that is not buried) coming to your house and the
age is unknown, there can be intermittent shorting.
A phone company will test the signal for you (up to your house to the interface box)
at no cost.

And finally, maybe you can try a different modem.
Although it never developed a problem, my Global Village 56k started showing a
slightly tannish tint to the case on one spot from being left on 24/7 for several
years.
