It sure sounds like your choice of a new or newer machine is correct. The only obeservation I can make on your S900, given the information you provided is: with 256MG of RAM it may be going to the HD as "virtual Memory".Iif this is an original speed SCSI drive this could be a data bottleneck. If you already use a PCI ATI card and a fast IDE Drive, then this isn't as much of an issue. In either event I believe your needs will dictate your computer choice. The S900, loaded with large IDE drives can still be a faithful serever, linked by Firewire, eithernet or USB2 if you run Panther on it. Paul C.

hi folks,

i recently rejoined the list because i needed to decide between upgrading my S900 again, or going with a new box. i've pretty much decided that it makes more sense to get a newer box.

the work i do is very computation intensive. using my S900 with a G4/400/200 metabox processor and 256M of RAM, a single calculation can require anywhere from 1-250 hours of CPU time. yeah! so, to get maximum bang for the buck, i need some answers and some advice i can rely on.

given the nature of the tasks i need to perform, how important is frontside bus speed? i'm guessing that it's at least as important as processor speed, because the CPU and the RAM must be doing a lot of talking during the execution. isn't that what frontside bus speed relates to, or am i off track here? if not, then i need to consider bus speeds as well as processor speeds when deciding between a new G5 or a slightly older G4, right?

surfing the auctions, i saw specs on a G5 imac that had a 600MHz frontside bus speed. are there faster motherboards in the newest G5 powermacs? in comparison, what are the bus speeds of 1GHz or faster G4 powermacs?

does anyone have any other advice?

TIA,

john
