MESSAGE: Yet another member of the Supermac list has been bit by the Sonnet G4700 800 upgrades. Sonnet and OWC continue to market these as compatible with the Umax J700 and S900 machines. I know of no one who is able to use these upgrades with OSX . They do work with OS 9.x Sonnet usally tries to sell their OSX software first and then continues to sandbag the poor sucker who bought the upgrade. They have to know full well they don't work as a lot of people have had this issue. Looks like another in a long line of marketing tricks by Sonnet. What does OWC have to say on this issue? thank you Will S

Have you tried our Xpostfacto FREE/Shareware OSX compatibility solution?

Also I don't think we or Sonnet make any guarantees with OSX-and this product is a good upgrade for OS 9 regardless. I'll have to see what marketing pitch Sonnet is making on them. Even so, out Xpostfacto does work with both the Sonnet and the J700/S900 model you have. We demonstrate Xpostfacto with a loaded Powermac 7300 each year at Macworld Expo and Ryan Rempel(the author) does daily presentations on it. Last year we did it with the G4/800 Sonnet-this year did it with our new 1 GHz Powerlogix G3 product.

Well Larry responded within 5 min of my email yesterday! His reply would seem to indicate either not reading the post closely or perhaps I wasn't clear enough. I have since sent two more posts in hopes of making my point clear. I've not heard back yet. I am asking him to make it clear on his sales page for the Sonnet G4 700/800 upgrades that they don't work with the Umax S900/J700 and OSX. I also think it would be a generous act of good will to offer a refund to people who got stuck with upgrades that don't work as expected. Sonnet continues to market this upgrade as compatible with the Umax machines. Their tech support suggests people having problems installing OSX using XPFacto spend $29.95 for the Sonnet OSX install solution. It is a copy of the XPFacto extensions using the open source control panel from Darwin (which I used way back before XPFacto and Ryans help). Few people seem happy with it. It of course doesn't work with these upgrades either. OWC has been a great friend of us with older Macs and clones. They sell many other cpu upgrades that do work fine in our Umax machines. The Sonnet card not working with Umax machines has also been a topic many times in the XPFacto forums. If I hear any more from Larry I will let you know. Will S
