well, i snagged one of these video cards for a
somewhat decent price. here's my summary.
it was a good deal.
i had doubts on whether this new video card would make
any improvement on the performance of my machine since
i believe that a G3 upgrade would be better, but i had
issues with slow text in Quark and slow/choppy 3D
movie playback.
the bad news: the slow text in Quark is still there
the decent news : the 3D playback is better. not so
choppy. it could be because i didn't upgrade the
ATI7000 drivers when i installed OSX. i did for the
ATI9200, but the performance is not what i had
expected. perhaps it's the movie settings.
the GREAT news: is that web surfing is a pleasure
again. pages load up more instantaneously than before.
for example, at Apple's store when i was modifying
what to add and subtract for the G5 desktop, each time
i choose an option (those drop down menus), i'd get
the spinning beach ball with the ATI7000. now, when i
choose an option (say adding more ram), no spinning.
nothing. it takes the change and i'm off. wow.
ESPN also loads much faster. in fact, the best benefit
of this new video card is faster web browsing.
navigating through the finder and opening up folders
seem snappier as well.
so overall, is it worth the cost? ummm... well, it
puts me off buying that G5 i want. and web surfing is
a pleasure again. so to me, yes, it's worth it.
and it looks cool too. nice and red. bloody red.
